Here is your Monday dose of motivation. An inspiring blend of innovation and sustainability, Imagine Powertree, a Gandhinagar-based startup founded by Shani Pandya, has revolutionized renewable energy by transforming plastic waste into solar tiles and designing the unique PowerTree system.
This initiative addresses India’s mounting plastic waste crisis and provides an affordable and adaptable renewable energy solution.
Pandya’s journey began as a chemical engineering student at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) in Gujarat, where he identified the dual challenges of plastic pollution and inefficient solar installations.
Every problem holds the seed of a solution and innovation blooms in adversity. This motivated him to create a solution, he experimented with recycling non-biodegradable plastic waste into durable, weather-resistant materials suitable for solar applications.
The result was two groundbreaking innovations: solar tiles made from processed plastic waste and the PowerTree, a tree-like solar structure designed for efficient energy capture.
These solar tiles are lightweight, cost-effective, and eco-friendly, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional solar panels. The PowerTree imitates the natural structure of trees, with multiple solar panels mounted at different angles to maximize energy generation throughout the day
Pandya’s innovations have some real-world applications including an 8 kW PowerTree installed at the Statue of Unity’s Cactus Garden, which powers the site with clean energy, and contributions to the Gandhinagar Smart City project, where these structures illuminate streetlights.
The startup’s use of recycled plastic for both solar tiles and structural components showcases a remarkable integration of waste management with renewable energy. Today, the company is valued at ₹13 crores, and its solar tiles are making a substantial impact by promoting clean energy while reducing plastic waste
Recognized for its innovative approach, Imagine Powertree is a shining example of how entrepreneurship can address critical environmental challenges. Pandya’s work inspires a future where waste is not a problem but a valuable resource driving India’s renewable energy revolution.
