NIT Rourkela’s New Tech Makes Solar Power Cheaper and Smarter

A team of researchers from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela has created a new low-cost technology to help solar panels produce more electricity, even when the weather changes. Their innovation has also received a patent, the institute announced on Thursday.

Prof. Susovon Samanta led the research team from the Electrical Engineering department and PhD student Satabdi Bhattacharya and Dual Degree student Madhusmita Barik.

Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, but their power output changes throughout the day due to shifts in temperature and sunlight intensity. A method called Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) ensures they always work at their best. MPPT helps adjust the voltage and current to get the most energy from the sun.

Traditional MPPT systems use expensive current sensors and react slowly to weather changes. To solve this problem, Prof. Samanta’s team developed a new method that only needs a simple voltage sensor instead of costly current sensors. This makes the system less complex, more efficient, and cheaper.

Prof. Samanta explained, “Our method keeps power stable and avoids small fluctuations. It also reacts quickly to sunlight and temperature changes, ensuring better performance. Since it only needs a voltage sensor, it reduces costs and can be used in different solar power setups.”

This technology can benefit various solar applications, including small solar projects, solar-powered IoT devices, home lighting systems, and remote energy solutions. It is a major step toward making solar energy more affordable and reliable.
