India has taken a significant step toward encouraging clean energy in the Indo-Pacific region.
On November 26, 2024, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) signed a Project Implementation Agreement (PIA) with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to execute solar projects in Comoros, Fiji, Madagascar, and Seychelles.
This agreement will focus on commitments made during the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Delaware, USA, in September 2024, under the Wilmington Declaration. The summit called for advancing clean energy supply chains and catalyzing private sector investments in renewable energy.
India has pledged USD 2 million to support solar projects in these countries, focusing on resolving critical energy challenges.
According to ISA, these regions face irregular electricity for essential services such as healthcare and agriculture. The solarization of healthcare facilities, solar projects for cold storage, and solar-powered water pumps, are under active consideration to solve these issues in such areas.
The initiative is expected to transform energy access and create employment opportunities while ensuring a steady power supply for these nations.
This attempt reflects India’s commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions, co-ordinating with the Quad’s vision of promoting economic development and environmental sustainability.
Being on the frontline of clean energy investments in the region, India declares its leadership in driving a green energy transition globally.
This strategic partnership underlines the critical role of renewable energy in advancing unbiased access to electricity, enhancing resilience against climate challenges, and promoting long-term economic growth in the Indo-Pacific region.
