China Plans Massive 253 GW Solar Build in Desert North for Green Growth

China is ready to deploy 253 GW of photovoltaic (PV) solar power in the northern deserts, which is known as Shagehuang. These desert areas are in Inner Mongolia, and other northern areas receive sunshine, making them ideal for large-scale solar and wind development.

The China plan is part of its ongoing “photovoltaic desert control” strategy. They aim to convert sands into solar farms that will not only generate clean power but also help stabilize shifting dunes and use the dry land.

China has already managed to improve more than half of its desert land that can be fixed by using trees, controlled animal grazing, and setting up solar panels.

One example is the “photovoltaic sea” in Ordos City’s Kubuqi Desert, which is around 3.46 million panels stretching over 30 km², turning barren land into a solar-powered oasis.

China plans to build a huge solar power project in the northern Kubuqi Desert, called the “PV Great Wall,” which will stretch 400 kilometers and produce 100 gigawatts of electricity.

China aims for 455 GW of solar and wind in desert areas, which is equal to around the combined capacity of 20 Three Gorge dams. This green energy will be sent over thousands of kilometers to cities and areas where it is needed, using strong and modern electricity lines.

The Scientists also said that desert PV farms can improve local climates, reducing wind speeds, lowering ground evaporation, and boosting vegetation growth under and around panels. This supports the ecological benefits of the project.

This dual-purpose model PV and desert restoration, has positioned China as a global leader, showcasing a scalable and replicable blueprint that combines renewable energy with environmental recovery.
