Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a renewable energy plan. The plan aims to strengthen the state’s energy infrastructure.
In a recent review meeting, he instructed officials to speed up two key solar initiatives. The first one is the Kaza solar power project, which is expected to be launched by August 2025. A 1 MW solar power plant with battery storage is being constructed in Dhanwas, a remote area in Pangi Valley, Chamba district. It is expected to be ready by December 2025.
The Dhanwas project aims to provide uninterrupted electricity to 19 gram panchayats, even during extreme winters.
In a major step toward energy improvement, the CM also ordered the cancellation of long-delayed hydroelectric projects and the withdrawal of contracts from non-performing private players.
He highlighted the need for transparency and directed efforts toward projects that align with the state’s green vision.
The state is also exploring large pumped storage potential, which is about 4,403 MW at Bhakra Dam and another 8,700 MW at Kol Dam. They add up to a combined potential of over 13 GW. These pumped storage projects would support grid stability and renewable integration in the future.
The CM announced plans to develop five new 66 kV substations and ten 132/220 kV substations under HPSEBL and HPPTCL to improve grid connectivity.
He also mentioned that the government will recover several hydroelectric projects which is earlier allotted to SJVNL, including the 382 MW Sunni, 210 MW Luhri Stage I, and 66 MW Dhaulasidh projects.
But development on the Kishau and Renuka dams will remain paused due to pending inter-state issues.
He asked fast completion of the 450 MW Shong Tong Hydroelectric Project. He also stressed starting the “Green Panchayat” plan to promote clean energy use in villages.
