Scientists Develop Solar Cells That Collect Energy from Dim Indoor Light

Researchers in Taiwan have developed advanced perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). Under the dim indoor light, the cell can produce electricity efficiently, such as a typical office light at around 2,000 lux.

These cells achieve an amazing 38.7% power conversion efficiency (PCE) in low light conditions

These solar cells achieved an impressive 38.7% power conversion efficiency (PCE) in such low-light conditions. However, these new solar cells are not as efficient in bright sunlight.

They only convert 12.7% of sunlight into electricity, while traditional silicon panels convert about 26%. The news cells work much better indoors. Their strength is that they work properly in indoor applications.

The success of these cells is possible because of their unique qualities of perovskite materials. They are lightweight, flexible, and semi-transparent, unlike traditional hard silicon panels.

The design of this cell allows it to absorb the low-intensity indoor light and convert this into electricity more perfectly.

This innovation gives new possibilities for indoor uses, such as powering office windows, smartphone screens, remote controls, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. These cells can regularly generate power from natural light, even on cloudy days.

It can also help to create devices that power themselves and surfaces that can generate energy, making it a smart and green option for homes and offices.
