According to Mercom India, India’s rooftop solar capacity in the first half of 2024 has added 1.1 GW. Installations have increased up to 26 %  compared to the previous year which was 873 MW in 1H 2023.

In the second quarter of 2024, India saw a remarkable boost in rooftop solar installation with an addition of 731 MW, a massive increase of almost 89 % YoY compared with 388 MW in Q2 of 2023.  

Installations had a growth of 99% from the previous quarter’s 367 MW, according to the reports.

The scheme launched by government PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana played a major role in the growth of residential rooftop solar capacity in the first half of 2024.

Rooftop Solar installations increased by nearly 923% compared to the previous quarter making 72% of projects complete in that period.

CEO of Mercom Capital Group,  Raj Prabhu said, “After overcoming initial setbacks, we can anticipate consistently higher installation rates in the residential segment moving forward. Nevertheless, the success of the program could be hindered by domestic module availability, component shortages, and escalating costs if these issues are not resolved,”.

States like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu led the way in rooftop solar capacity additions in Q2 2024.

The top five states had a rise of over 81% of all installations during this quarter. As of June 2024, India’s rooftop installation has reached 11.6 GW. 

Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Kerala, and Karnataka are leading in the installations of rooftop solar capacity this quarter.

Overall, the top 10 states of the country are contributing to 78% of rooftop solar capacity installations as of June 2024.
