Solar-Powered Boats to Begin Service on Yamuna in Gokul-Vrindavan

A new boat service will soon start on the Yamuna River between Gokul and Vrindavan. These boats will run on solar power instead of diesel or petrol. This project is a step toward clean transport and better river use.

The plan is led by the Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad (UPBTVP) and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). In the first phase, they will build eight jetties, which are boat boarding points. The work is expected to finish by the end of May.

The full length of the waterway is 22 kilometers. It runs between Vasudev Vatika in Gokul and Jugal Kishore Ghat in Vrindavan. In the first phase, there will be 11 jetties in total, three in Mathura and five in Vrindavan.

IWAI Chairman Vijay Kumar said that work on the jetties has already begun. He added that big boats will not be used because of the shallow water. Instead, light fibre boats with solar and battery power will run.

A survey will be done to check water levels. A team will also solve issues caused by low bridges that block the way.

Officials said that local boat operators will also be allowed to use the jetties. This will help people earn money. Tenders are out to build toilets, seating areas, and other facilities near the jetties.

UPBTVP Vice President Shailja Kant Mishra said they want to avoid fuel-powered boats to protect the river and its surroundings.

The full project cost is ₹28.35 crore. IWAI will build the jetties, and the Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority will build the roads and public spaces around them.

This project may soon offer a cleaner and safer way for people to travel along the Yamuna.
