India outshines and overtakes Japan to become the third-largest solar power generator in 2023. According to the reports by global energy think tank Ember, India reached ninth position in 2015.

The report included data about 80 countries that make 92% of the world’s electricity. This information was further about 215 countries. According to this report, India made a huge leap in generating solar power. This leap took India to third position in 2023 from third position in 2015.

This year it was a record 5.5 percent of global solar electricity in 2023. Particularly, India generated 5.8 percent of its electricity by solar in 2023. India acknowledged the world’s fourth largest growth in solar generation adding 18 Terawatt hours (TWh) followed by China (156Twh), the United States (33Twh), and Brazil (22Twh). Together these countries were responsible for 75% of global solar growth in 2023.

Aditya Lolla, Ember’s Asia Programme Director said “A renewables-powered future is now becoming a reality. Solar power, in particular, is growing at an unprecedented pace”. Electricity produced by Solar has continuously risen for nineteenth consecutive years now, overtaking coal as an electricity generator in 2023.

According to IEA Net Zero Emissions, in 2030 Solar would rise to 22 percent of global electricity generation. Solar electricity will play a leading role in the upcoming electricity industry which will reduce climate change and curb carbon emissions. This will also help in meeting the rising electricity demand.
