Two women from Bihar, Devki Devi and Sunita Devi, have become shining examples of how determination and innovation can change lives. Fondly called the “Solar Didis,” they have used solar-powered irrigation pumps to help farmers in their villages while transforming their lives.

Devki Devi was once an ordinary housewife from Ratanpura village in Muzaffarpur. Today, she provides water to farmers across 35 acres of land using her solar pump. Starting with just five farmers, she now serves over 65, earning ₹1.5 lakh per annum. Devki said “When I was ill, these farmers paid me in advance, which helped cover my hospital bills. This work has changed my life.”

Sunita Devi, from Bhagwanpur Dadhya, has a similar inspiring story. She helps irrigate 32 acres of farmland and uses her income to educate her daughter. She says, “I dream of my daughter becoming financially independent like me. The villagers appreciate what I’ve achieved, making me proud.”

Both women had no formal education and faced challenges convincing their families to let them start this work. But their determination paid off. They are part of the Jeevika Self-Help Group, which empowers rural women. Today, over 100 women are part of the Solar Didi initiative, helping solve problems like high irrigation costs and climate change.

Mukesh Chandra of the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme says, “Solar-powered pumps are cheaper and eco-friendly. Women like Devki and Sunita are making farming more productive.”

Their stories inspire countless women in rural India. “Believe in your dreams and work hard to achieve them,” says Devki. Indeed, these Solar Didis are true role models for a better and sustainable future.
