Not Many, But Maini Renewables – A Mumbaikar Girl’s Journey to Power Change

Even today, many villages in India struggle with the lack of electricity. Clean energy solutions are also the need of the hour. In such a time, a young engineer from Mumbai has come up with a wonderful innovation. This new technology is helping villages in remote areas like Gadchiroli and Melghat get regular electricity. Even after independence, these villages had no power or received it very irregularly.

Ten Years of Experience

Swati Maini, a mechanical engineer, studied at Drexel University in the USA and worked there for ten years. But when she returned to India, she decided to do something about the electricity shortage in her village. During the COVID-19 pandemic, at the College of Engineering Pune (COEP), she developed a small turbine that can generate electricity from the flowing water of rivers and canals.

She even patented this device under the title “Turbines and Associated Systems and Methods.” To take this innovation forward, she started her own company called ‘Maini Renewables.’ With this technology, small streams and canals can now produce electricity without the need for building dams. We all know how building dams can harm the environment. In comparison, this small turbine is a much more eco-friendly solution.

What is Special About Her Technology

Swati explained that they fitted a generator over the rotor, which rotates with the flow of water to generate electricity. Unlike wind and solar, which depend on weather conditions, this device can provide continuous and limitless power. It can be installed in rivers and canals easily.

Swati plans to build bigger and more powerful turbines. She has priced this device at around ₹1 lakh. In areas where electricity is already available, people can even connect it to the grid and sell excess electricity. She has tested this device with institutions like IIT Roorkee, and it has proven to be one of the most efficient renewable energy solutions.

Her innovation is now becoming a hope for the remotest corners of India where electricity had never reached before.
