India’s recent agreement to export green ammonia to Japan will establish a strong supply chain and lead to future partnerships in the green energy sector, said Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy.
Joshi was addressing during an event to sign a Head of Terms (HoT) agreement between Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., and NYK Line, establishing a green ammonia supply partnership from India to Japan.
Under the agreement officially announced in June, Sembcorp Industries will lead the production of green ammonia in India, using renewable energy sources.
Kyushu Electric Power Co. has committed to integrating this green ammonia into its energy mix, which will reduce coal usage at their Japanese thermal power plants.
Sojitz Corporation will act as the bridge between the ammonia producer and the off-taker.
NYK Line will manage the maritime transportation of the green ammonia from India to Japan.
According to a government statement, Joshi said, “Today is a historic day as we mark the first-ever agreement for the supply of Green Ammonia from India to Japan.
This agreement will help establish a robust supply chain from production in India to consumption in Japan, paving the way for future collaborations in the green energy sector”.
The minister also paid attention to India’s development in green hydrogen and renewable energy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Further, he highlighted that the nation wants to become a global leader in producing green hydrogen and ammonia production, and plans to achieve this through strategic partnerships, creating strong rules, and making huge investments in this industry.
