India’s Energy Stack Could Be the Next UPI-Like Revolution in the Power Sector

by | Jul 7, 2025 | News | 0 comments

Just imagine you are storing extra electricity from your rooftop solar panels in a neighbour’s battery and then paying them at that moment using a secure digital platform.

This amazing scenario soon became a reality with the launch of the India Energy Stack(IES). It is possible because of a digital public infrastructure (DPI) aimed at transforming India’s divided power sector.

A  digital public infrastructure(DPI) is being developed to improve and modernize India’s power sector, the same way Aadhaar changed how we prove our identity and UPI changed how we make payments.

The Indian government has created a team of 17 people, chaired by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, to design and develop this new system for the whole country.

The Ministry of Power set up this team on June 27. Their job is to make a clear plan for how to start and develop the India Energy Stack (IES), which will take several years.

The aim of the India Energy Stack (IES) is to connect all parts of India’s energy system, such as power companies, electricity grids, government bodies, and users, through a digital platform.

This will let people exchange electricity with each other, make power usage more flexible, and make it easier to buy and sell carbon credits.

One main reason for this step is that electricity is managed by both the central and state governments, which has created a broken system where data is scattered and not connected.

According to the think tank FSR Global, this lack of connection is making it harder for India to reach its clean energy targets. The India Energy Stack (IES) plans to fix these issues by introducing things like unique IDs, better data formats, and systems that can easily work together.
