The COP29 climate conference is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, and India is actively participating in the discussions, mainly focused on fair climate funding and sustainable growth, especially for developing nations.

India’s target is to make sure that wealthier countries fulfill their promises to help developing countries fight against climate change.

One of India’s main points at the conference is “accountability”, Indian delegates stressed that developed countries should be held responsible for providing the financial help they previously pledged.

This funding is crucial for developing countries to deal with climate change impacts and transition to clean energy sources.

Another focus for India is “green credit”—a way to promote sustainable practices through financial incentives.

India is also promoting the “LiFE” initiative, which stands for “Lifestyle for Environment.” This concept motivates people to adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives, helping to reduce their environmental footprint.

For the first time, India has chosen not to host a pavilion at COP29. Instead, the country is putting all its efforts into discussions and actions that could lead to positive results for developing economies.

This change in strategy shows India’s dedicated and responsible role in global climate efforts.

In his opening remarks, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action. He warned that without serious efforts, the planet could face up to five degrees of warming.

The Indian delegation to the conference will be led by Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, as Leader of the DelegationLeena Nandan, Secretary, as Deputy Leader of the Delegation; Naresh Pal Gangwar, Additional Secretary, as Lead Negotiator; and Neelesh Sah, Joint Secretary, as Deputy Lead Negotiator.
