PM – Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a government scheme that aims to provide free electricity to one crore households in India. It was launched by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024, and the Union Cabinet approved it on February 29, 2024.

Under this scheme, households will be provided with a subsidy to establish rooftop solar panels. The amount invested by the government in this scheme is Rs 75,021 crore. With the help of the subsidy given by the government, 40% of the cost of solar panels will be covered. Households installing these solar panels will get almost 300 units of free electricity every month.

This scheme provides various benefits which include free electricity for households, the electricity costs for the government will be reduced, it will reduce the consumption of non-renewable energy and increased renewable energy, and reduce carbon emissions. 

There are some suitable eligibility criteria for availing of the scheme which is as follows – 

  • The household should be an Indian citizen.
  • Households must be suitable for the installation of solar panels.
  • Households should have a proper power supply connection. 
  • Households must not avail of any other subsidy for solar panel installation.
