From Fintech to Solar: Ok Credit’s Founder’s Journey Toward Sustainability

A young IIT Kanpur alumnus known for building a platform that helps India’s small shopkeepers manage their credit digitally has been making headlines lately for more than just business.

Harsh Pokharna, CEO and co-founder of OkCredit, personally helped his team members as an act of leadership after a difficult round of layoffs and found them new job roles that won hearts across the startup ecosystem.

But behind the boardroom decisions and startup stress, this Jaipur boy is quietly living a life of intention and sustainability.

It’s not every day that a fintech founder’s Instagram story sparks a conversation about clean energy. But that’s exactly what happened when Harsh Pokharna recently posted a story of his rooftop solar panels at his home in Jaipur.

When we reached out to him to understand what led him to take this step and install a rooftop solar panel, he was generous enough to share his thoughts on going solar and his views on India’s renewable energy future.

Harsh shares with Renewable Affairs, “I’ve always tried to be mindful, even while travelling, I carry my own bottle, avoid plastic, and use public transport whenever I can. Going solar just felt like the next natural step.”

His solar system? A 3 kW setup on the rooftop of his family home in Jaipur is simple, quiet, and powerful.

He admits that for a long time, he thought solar was complicated or something only “eco experts” do. “But honestly, once you start reading about it, you realize it’s easier than you think. Jaipur gets plenty of sun. Why not use it?”

He further said he isn’t trying to set a trend, he’s just doing what feels right. As someone who deeply understands India’s startup mindset, Harsh also believes there’s growing space for entrepreneurs in the renewable sector.

“There are gaps in awareness, financing, and last-mile solar services. Founders who can simplify the journey for homes or small businesses will not only build meaningful companies, they’ll build impact.”

But stories like his matter. They show that the move to clean energy doesn’t always start with big government projects or flashy campaigns. Sometimes, it begins with a simple rooftop and one person deciding to make a change.

And maybe that’s the reminder we need: “Good stories still exist, and they’re powered by the sun.”
