The seventh session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly is currently taking place in New Delhi with leaders and ministers from 29 countries participating to discuss the future of solar energy.

The ISA assembly, the alliance’s apex decision-making body, chose India as the President of ISA for the 2024-2026 term, and France has been chosen for the Co-President position.

While India was the only presidential candidate, France won a contest against Grenada for the Co-President position.

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, President of ISA, said India’s role shows its dedication to promoting solar power worldwide. He emphasized India’s ongoing work to increase solar energy adoption and attract investments under the current government.

India and France have set ambitious goals to bring solar power to various parts of the world, hoping to create a big impact and promote renewable energy sources.

In this assembly, eight Vice Presidents were also selected representing four regional groups. Two representatives from each ISA region were chosen. 

For the African region, Ghana and Seychelles were picked as Vice Presidents, with South Sudan and Comoros as Vice-Chairs. From Asia and the Pacific, Australia and Sri Lanka are the Vice Presidents, with UAE and Papua New Guinea as Vice-Chairs. 

Germany and Italy are representing Europe, while Grenada and Suriname are leading the Latin American and Caribbean region.

ISA member countries also appointed Ashish Khanna as the third Director General of ISA, he will take office in March 2025, succeeding Ajay Mathur.

Another key decision was taken by launching a Solar Data Portal, which will provide real-time data on solar resources, investments, and performance among the member countries.
