India is taking a significant leap in the global Green Hydrogen arena by committing an estimated investment of ₹30000 to ₹45,000 crore for a 15,000 MW electrolyzer manufacturing capacity by 2026. This ambitious effort is a part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) program. This places India among the world’s top rankers in the production of Green Hydrogen.

To support this extensive capacity expansion, the government has allocated ₹12,500 crores in incentives, for the next five years one of the single largest investments of its kind globally.

According to a senior official, a transparent tendering process is held in which around 15 companies establish these manufacturing plants, which are likely to start their operations by the middle of 2025, ahead of the original mid-2026 target. Ohmium a leading company already have initiated production with a 2,000 MW plant.

On the other hand, Ohmium has signed an MOU with the Tamilnadu government to invest ₹ 400 crores for a green energy manufacturing facility in Chengalpattu district.

India’s strategy under the SIGHT program is dual-focused, including domestic consumption and export markets, 412,000 tonnes of Green Hydrogen contracts have been given, and an additional 450,000 tonnes are planned.

For domestic use, priority is given to vital sectors such as refineries and fertilizers, to ensure that production is close to the marketplace and transportation can be minimal.

Furthermore, a tender for 7 lac tonnes of Green Ammonia has been launched, the largest green hydrogen tender globally.

In addition, India aims to leverage a strong renewable energy market to address the cost disparity between gray and green hydrogen. This cuts carbon emissions from 11 kg of CO₂ per kg of hydrogen down to 2 kg and creates valuable carbon credits that could make green hydrogen significantly more economically viable.

Although the application of Green Hydrogen in electric mobility is at its initial stages, there are several pilot projects in the pipeline, reflecting India’s vision for spearheading a transition into sustainable energy solutions for the world.

Thus, through the SIGHT program, India is creating a path for a robust Green Hydrogen ecosystem. Similarly, large-scale investment will be strategic for both domestic and international markets, positioning India to become a pivotal hub within the global Green Hydrogen landscape.
