India produces a lot of milk, fruits, and vegetables. But sadly, almost half of it goes to waste because there isn’t enough cold storage. A report says only 11% of India’s perishable food can be stored in cold places.
That’s where Inficold comes in. It’s a company started in 2015 by Dr. Nitin Goel and Dr. Himanshu Pokharna. Both of them used to work at Intel and later started this venture to fix the cold storage problem, especially for farmers.
Inficold makes solar-powered cold storage systems. These do not need constant electricity. Their technology stores ice during the day using solar panels, and this ice keeps food cool even when the sun is down. Their storage can keep things cool for up to 4 days without electricity.
Unlike other systems that use batteries and inverters, which wear out over time, Inficold’s design avoids these problems. This makes it low-maintenance and more reliable in remote places.
The storage units come in different sizes. For example, they offer 500-liter and 1,000-liter milk coolers, and larger cold rooms that can hold up to 10,000 kg of fruits and vegetables. These are being used by farmers, cooperatives, and even temples that serve meals to many people daily.
Inficold’s solar cold storage is already installed in over 19 states in India. They are also working with state governments and social organizations to help farmers increase their income by reducing spoilage.
In the next two years, Inficold plans to install 1,000+ solar cold storage units across India to build a stronger and greener food supply chain.
