Lucknow has become a leader in installing rooftop solar panels under the new PM Surya Ghar Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15 this year.

This scheme encourages people to switch to clean energy by installing solar panels on their rooftops. Lucknow has the highest number of installations among the five key districts in Uttar Pradesh.

Besides Lucknow, other cities like Kanpur, Agra, Varanasi, and Prayagraj are also interested in adopting solar energy.

According to a press release, 11,435 solar panels have been installed in Lucknow, making it the leader in rooftop solar installations. In Varanasi, 4,088 panels, Kanpur has 1909, Agra, and Prayagraj have 1,364 and 1,349 panels respectively since the scheme’s launch.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has set targets for all 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh to install solar rooftop panels on residential buildings. The scheme is doing well in all districts, and the power department has been asked to speed up the work.

So far, 17.75 lakh registrations have been completed under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, and about 3,200 homes have already installed solar rooftop panels. The scheme provides a subsidy of ₹45,000 for 1-kilowatt installations, with ₹30,000 coming from the Central Government and ₹15,000 from the State Government.

For 2-kilowatt installations, a combined subsidy of ₹90,000 is offered (₹60,000 from the Central Government and ₹30,000 from the State). For installations of 3 kilowatts and above, the total subsidy is ₹1.08 lakh, with ₹78,000 from the Central Government and ₹30,000 from the State Government.

The Yogi government has set a goal to install solar panels on 25 lakh homes across Uttar Pradesh. To reach this goal, specific targets have been set for all seven DISCOMs in each state district.
