Mahakumbh, the world’s largest spiritual gathering, begins on January 13, 2025, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and will be a blend of spirituality and sustainability.

This iconic event is set to be lightened by over 40,000 rechargeable bulbs powered by solar energy.

Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has taken a significant step by implementing solar-powered lights and hybrid systems throughout the fairgrounds.

These rechargeable lights, equipped with built-in batteries, will provide uninterrupted 24/7 lighting even during power outages.

The Mahakumbh will symbolize how renewable energy can power even the grandest gatherings with solar panels generating electricity across the venue.

The administration installed 2,000 solar hybrid lights strategically so that no corner of the grounds would be left in darkness. These lights are designed to switch seamlessly to battery power during outages, providing continuous supply without compromising the event’s divine ambiance.

Additionally, solar-powered LED lights will be used in temporary tents and settlements, which will reduce dependency on conventional energy sources and minimize carbon emissions.

Beyond solar lighting, the Mahakumbh will set a benchmark in sustainability. Organizers have created zero-waste zones for waste segregation and on-site composting of biodegradable materials.

Single-use plastics are being prohibited, with eco-friendly alternatives, for eg. special kiosks for refilling reusable water bottles spread across the venue.

Sanitation facilities are also available with portable toilets equipped with waste treatment systems that convert waste into biogas or manure. Moreover, for air pollution, pilgrims are encouraged to use electric rickshaws, bicycles, and shared transport services within the event grounds.

This Mahakumbh, “Aastha ka Mahasangam” serves as a shining example of how tradition and sustainability can coexist with millions of devotees expected to attend the event.
