The Indian government has launched a green hydrogen certification scheme to establish an international framework for green hydrogen production. GHCI is a system to certify hydrogen as green if it is produced from renewable energy sources. It will ensure transparency and credibility in the system. The scheme applies to companies that have applied for government incentives to produce green hydrogen. It excludes exporters who are not availing of these benefits.
The criteria for certification are: hydrogen should be produced by the electrolysis process or via biomass conversion. The yearly average emission should not exceed 2 kg of CO₂ per kg of H₂. A third-party agency will verify the source of hydrogen produced, and on their recommendation, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency will provide certificates.
This scheme is significant because it is aligned with international standards. It will allow India to have a proper system that is transparent. It provides a complete monitoring, verification, and compliance framework that will reduce fake green claims. It will benefit producers, as with this certificate, they can tap into the global market. Industries can also achieve their ESG goals and decarbonize their operations.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element on Earth. It can provide clean fuel options. There are many types of hydrogen; it has been color-coded based on the energy used to produce it. For instance, green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by the electrolysis method, and its by-product is oxygen.
Therefore, it is a clean fuel as there are no CO₂ emissions. Pink hydrogen is hydrogen produced through the electrolysis method using nuclear power. It is also considered clean energy. However, black, brown, or grey hydrogen is a type of hydrogen where there is a negative impact on the environment, either CO₂ is released as a by-product, or fossil fuels are used to produce it. Hence, it is not considered clean energy.
The GHCI scheme will aid the government in its National Hydrogen Mission, which focuses on scaling up green hydrogen production and utilization in the country. This will allow India to tap into the green hydrogen economy and its benefits.
