The Indian government has launched the “Model Solar Village” initiative under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which was notified by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to promote solar energy adoption in rural areas. As part of this ambitious plan, one village in each district will be selected to become a model solar village, an example of sustainable energy practices across the country.
The primary objective of this scheme is to empower rural communities by ensuring they have access to clean, renewable energy, and reducing their dependence on conventional power sources. Only those villages that have a revenue and a population of around 5000 people or 2000 in special category states will be considered.
All the selected villages will receive a financial grant of ₹1 crore, which will be used to establish solar energy infrastructure that is capable of meeting the entire village’s electricity needs. The total budget allocated for the scheme is ₹800 crore, which will be distributed across the participating districts.
The government has established a competitive selection process for villages to prioritize the highest potential for solar energy generation. The factors for selection include the village’s current energy consumption, land space for solar panels, and the community’s interest in participating in the project.
The District Level Committee (DLC), will regulate the implementation of the scheme, with the support of the State/UT Renewable Energy Development Agency. Once the village is selected, it will undergo an assessment to determine the best possible approach for setting up solar energy systems.
The long-term impact of this scheme is expected to significantly develop the model solar villages which will set an example for other rural communities. By highlighting the possibility and benefits of solar energy, the govt of India is eager to inspire the widespread adoption of solar energy solutions, both for rural development and environmental sustainability.
