Solar power will be installed in around 3,000 Anganwadis in Pune. This project is called Harit Anganwadi, which aims to provide lighting and reduce electricity bills. The District Planning Committee and the CSR initiatives of businesses in Pune will provide the funding.
Currently, 1,100 Anganwadis are operated by solar energy. Pune ZP’s Chief Executive Officer announced that a ₹10 crore proposal will be submitted to the committee to fund solar energy projects in 985 out of 3,284 Anganwadis. CSR activities by corporates are supporting the funding for the other 2,300 Anganwadis.
Anganwadis are significant for preschool education and nutrition in women and children. In order to attract enrollment of children by their parents in Anganwadi, ZP has taken the initiative to upgrade Anganwadis. Anganwadis depend on the Panchayat for electricity. They often succumb to power cuts. The District Council’s initiative to install solar power will help Anganwadis to save on electricity bills and will allow a continuous power supply.
According to the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, each project is likely to cost one lakh rupees. The overall project cost is estimated at around ₹10 crores. The DPC also put aside funds, around 3% for women and children. Apart from solar power, steps are also being taken to develop a kitchen garden at Anganwadis. Drumstick trees will be planted to improve nutrition in the diets of women and children.
