The Central government has announced a ₹100-crore scheme to support startups which is working on green hydrogen. Under this plan, each project can receive up to ₹5 crore for pilot work in hydrogen production, storage, transport, and usage.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi introduced the scheme at a two-day conference, where 25 startups showcased innovations such as electrolyser manufacturing, AI-driven optimisation, and biological hydrogen solutions. Joshi said the initiative will help turn research into real-world applications that can power industries, clean cities, and create lakhs of jobs across the country.
The programme is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), launched in 2023 with a total outlay of ₹19,744 crore. The mission is based on four main areas: clear policies and rules, creating demand for green hydrogen, supporting research and innovation, and building the needed infrastructure. The goal is to make India a global leader in green hydrogen.
So far, 23 projects have already been approved under the research scheme. These projects focus on things like making hydrogen safer, producing it from biomass, and finding new ways to use it.
These are being carried out by top institutions such as IITs, IISERs, CSIR labs, and industry partners. The second round of R&D proposals, launched on July 14, is open until September 15.
India is also stepping up international collaborations. Under the EU-India Trade and Technology Council, more than 30 joint proposals have been submitted to explore hydrogen production from wastewater.
