120 GW and Counting: President Murmu Reveals India’s Big Solar Ambition for 2050

India is not just working to meet its clean energy targets but aims to become a global hub for solar power by 2050, President Droupadi Murmu said during the 8th session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) held in New Delhi on Tuesday.

She said India wants to bring countries together to boost solar demand, drive innovation, and share knowledge across borders.

Highlighting the country’s achievements, President Murmu noted that India now ranks 4th in total renewable capacity, 4th in wind power, and 3rd in solar power generation globally. She proudly added that India’s installed solar capacity has already crossed 120 GW, marking a big step toward the goal of 500 GW of non-fossil energy by 2030.

She also mentioned that the PM-KUSUM scheme is helping farmers gain energy security while contributing to clean power growth.

President Murmu praised the ISA’s “Solar for She” initiative, calling it a powerful step to bring more women into the renewable energy sector. “Women’s leadership in solar energy not only reduces carbon footprints but also breaks gender barriers,” she said.

She urged ISA member nations to link solar energy with job creation, rural livelihoods, women’s empowerment, and digital inclusion.

“Our progress should not only be measured in megawatts but in the number of lives illuminated,” she said, emphasizing that solarisation can democratize energy access and create a fairer, greener planet for all.

The International Solar Alliance, launched in 2015 and based in India, continues to play a key role in promoting solar energy worldwide.
