An IITian or Solar Man? Prof. Solanki Chooses Climate Over Classroom

by | Sep 19, 2025 | News | 0 comments

Climate champion Chetan Singh Solanki, a renowned professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) and popularly known as the ‘Solar Man of India’, has announced his resignation to dedicate himself fully to climate action.

His mission is to bring one billion people into the fold of climate awareness and consumption literacy. October 23 will mark his last day at IIT-B.

Prof. Solanki founded the Energy Swaraj Foundation and initiated the Energy Swaraj Yatra, a Gandhian-style journey undertaken in a solar-powered bus to promote the message of sustainability and energy independence.

He has traveled more than 68,000 km across India in this bus, giving over 1,650 talks on climate change and connecting with people, schools, and government leaders since 202

He realized that just spreading awareness is not enough; people need to take immediate action through his journey. He has warned that if urgent steps are not taken, the world could face irreversible climate change within the next three to four years, and the Earth could cross the dangerous 2°C limit in the next 25–30 years.

To push people into action, he started the Finite Earth Movement, which aims to inspire one billion people in three years to cut down carbon emissions by using the Earth’s limited resources more responsibly.

He plans to continue his solar bus campaign across India until December 2025, before expanding his journey globally from January.

“Science and technology can grow, but the planet cannot,” he said, urging people to reduce resource use as a simple yet powerful form of climate correction.
