Delhi Goes Solar: 1,000 Govt Buildings to Cut Bills and Carbon with Rooftop Power

by | Oct 6, 2025 | News | 0 comments

The Delhi government has announced a major push for renewable energy by installing solar panels on around 1,000 government buildings in the coming months.

These include hundreds of schools, more than 40 fire stations, 24 Delhi Jal Board offices, and over 70 Municipal Corporation of Delhi buildings.

According to officials, this project will generate 55 megawatt (MW) of green electricity, save more than ₹50 crore every year on power bills, and cut down 46,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The government has made it mandatory to install rooftop solar plants on all its buildings with an area of more than 500 square metres.

Out of the 3,880 identified government buildings, more than 1,200 already have rooftop solar plants, while the rest will be covered in phases.

Last month, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched this project at Rithala, where she inaugurated a 25 KW solar plant at the sewage treatment plant.

She announced that the work of installing solar plants on 1,000 buildings will be completed by January next year, setting Delhi on course for a cleaner and cost-efficient future.
