First of its Kind: Electric Trucks with Swappable Batteries at JNPA

In a big step towards green logistics, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off India’s first fleet of electric heavy trucks with swappable batteries at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) on 25 September. The launch took place at the Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal.

The initiative began with 50 electric trucks, and the fleet will expand to 80 by the end of this year. A heavy-duty battery swapping station has also been set up to keep operations smooth. JNPA has set a bold target: by December 2026, nearly 90% of its 600 heavy trucks will be converted to electric.

Sonowal said the move shows that India’s ports are ready for the future, embracing sustainability, efficiency, and innovation. He added that ports across the country are also investing in solar, wind, LNG, and hydrogen infrastructure as part of a wider decarbonisation push.

JNPA Chairperson Unmesh Sharad Wagh called the launch a “major leap toward a greener and more resilient future,” highlighting that growth must be built on sustainability. JNPA has also earned global recognition, being ranked among the Top 25 ports worldwide in the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index.
