Gorakshanagari: North Eastern Railway Plans Its Second Solar Park

by | Oct 1, 2025 | News | 0 comments

The North Eastern Railway (NER) is planning to build its second solar park in Gorakhpur to increase solar power production.

After setting up its first solar park at Banaras Locomotive Works, NER has now started looking for land in Gorakhpur for the new project. General Manager Uday Borwankar recently reviewed the progress of solar power generation and instructed officials to prepare a plan for the Gorakhpur solar park.

Since Gorakhpur is the headquarters of NER, officials believe there is no shortage of land. However, they will ensure the selected site receives adequate sunlight throughout the year.

NER has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. To meet this goal, the railway will invest ₹93.75 crore in renewable energy. Solar plants will also be installed on new office buildings, railway stations, and vacant railway land under partnership models.

According to CPRO Pankaj Kumar Singh, NER generated 36.25 lakh units of solar power by November of the 2024–25 financial year through rooftop installations. Land identification for the Gorakhpur solar park is currently underway.

As part of the Amrit Bharat Station redevelopment plan, solar plants will also be installed at 36 stations and on 1.54 acres of unused land across NER zones, including Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Izzatnagar.

These installations aim to generate 4 MW of solar power. At present, NER has already installed rooftop solar panels with a total capacity of 6.58 MWp.
