Hyper-Bike: Is it a Perfect Replacement for E-Bikes?

by | Jul 9, 2025 | News | 0 comments

HubUR, an Irish startup, has introduced the Boon H2. It is a hydrogen-powered “hyper‑bike” that could replace current battery-operated e-bikes. As cycling moves toward eco-friendly technology.

The Boon H2 bike solves some problems with electric bikes, like slow charging and heavy use of lithium, by using hydrogen fuel cells instead.

Instead of using heavy lithium batteries, the Boon H2 bike runs on a small, removable hydrogen cartridge that holds just 20 grams of hydrogen. When placed in the bike, it powers a fuel cell that turns hydrogen into electricity to run the motor.

Riders can carry extra cartridges to extend their journey, getting about 50 km of range from each one. With two cartridges, the bike can produce up to 500 Wh of power, which is similar to what many regular electric bikes offer.

A notable innovation is the option to produce hydrogen at home using a small electrolyzer. This device uses only water and electricity; no special infrastructure is needed. This will solve the limited availability of refueling stations in remote areas.

Besides its smart fuel system, the Boon H2 bike includes common parts like Shimano Tourney gears, an LCD screen, and weighs about 25 kg with 26-inch wheels. Since it’s a white-label product, it can be customized.

Its price is approximately €6,000 ($6,500). It’s a simple hydrogen cartridge system that allows fast swaps, avoiding long recharge times. This makes it well-suited for users and tourists needing consistent performance and range.

The Boon H2 makes it easier to use hydrogen for daily travel. Some experts point out that making hydrogen at home consumes a lot of electricity. Because of this, regular electric bikes might still be more energy-efficient.

Still, the Boon H2 is helping promote the idea of using hydrogen for transport, and even two-wheelers may be part of this future.
