India Cracks Down on Cyber Threats in Solar Sector With New Grid Protection Rules

by | Jul 25, 2025 | News | 0 comments

India has issued new cybersecurity measures to protect solar equipment from possible hacking or cyber threats, especially those linked to imported Chinese-made components.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy now requires solar inverter suppliers to connect their systems to a national software platform hosted in India and overseen by a government agency.

To further boost data security, only specialized SIM cards will be allowed for device communication, ensuring automated, human-free data exchange stays within national borders.

As power grids get smarter and more connected to the internet, the risk of hacking has become a big concern around the world. India is now also taking stronger steps to protect its energy systems, especially after reports that the US found strange issues with Chinese-made solar inverters.

The ministry said that if inverters send data to servers in other countries, it could lead to hackers gaining control and leaking important electricity data, which is a risk to the country’s energy safety.

The guidelines currently apply to rooftop solar inverters, seen as the most vulnerable component of the green energy network.

According to the India Smart Grid Forum, over 1.8 million rooftop solar units are now connected to India’s grid, and more than 80% of their inverters are sourced from Chinese firms.
