India has requested the world to come together and help Small Island Developing States (SIDS) improve their energy security through clean and affordable solar power. Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav made this appeal during the International Solar Alliance (ISA) SIDS Platform meeting at CoP30 in Belém, Brazil.

The session focused on how island nations, many of which depend on expensive imported fuel and face climate risks, can move toward reliable solar energy. Shri Yadav said that the ISA SIDS Platform is helping island countries by giving them better financial support, making solar technology easier to access, and building local skills so solar projects can grow faster.

He also shared India’s renewable energy achievements. India now has over 500 GW of power capacity, and more than half of it comes from clean energy. The country is the 4th largest in renewable energy and 3rd in the world for solar power.

The Minister talked about successful schemes like the PM Surya Ghar Rooftop Solar Program, which has helped more than 20 lakh families lower their electricity bills and even earn money by installing rooftop solar. He also mentioned solar pumps that help farmers, projects bringing electricity to remote areas, and large solar-plus-battery systems like the project in Ladakh.

Shri Yadav said that India’s experience can help island nations cut diesel use, lower energy costs, and become more climate-resilient. He described the ISA as a “Global Solar Family” of 124 countries working together to make solar power more accessible.

He ended by saying that solar energy is not just a technology; it brings hope, independence, and stability. Participants from island nations praised India’s achievements and expressed support for the ISA’s mission to improve renewable energy in at-risk regions.
