India Launches First Hydrogen Highway: A Big Step Toward Green Energy

by | Sep 29, 2025 | News | 0 comments

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday launched India’s first Hydrogen Highway, a landmark move to promote green hydrogen and connect long-distance freight transport with clean energy. As part of the project, hydrogen fueling stations will be set up along major national highway corridors.

Speaking at the launch, Gadkari said, “Hydrogen is the fuel of the future.” He announced that India has also begun the world’s first large-scale hydrogen truck trials. For this, five consortia have been selected across 10 routes, deploying 37 trucks with a budget of ₹500 crore.

To support these trials, nine hydrogen refueling stations will be built, creating India’s first-ever hydrogen highway ecosystem for clean and long-distance travel.

Gadkari also stressed the need to reduce India’s heavy reliance on crude oil imports, which currently meet 87% of demand and cost about ₹22 lakh crore annually. The launch happened during the World Hydrogen India Summit, organized by S&P Global Commodity Insights.

Government leaders, industry experts, and global specialists came together at the event. They discussed rules, funding, and trade routes to strengthen India’s hydrogen industry.

They also talked about using hydrogen instead of polluting methods in making chemicals and fertilizers, with a focus on making green ammonia and green urea affordable.

Experts said that international certification, special shipping routes, and better logistics are important for India to become a strong player in the global hydrogen export market.
