This is an amazing development for India’s energy and mining sectors. The Parsa East and Kanta Basan (PEKB) coal mine in Chhattisgarh has become the first coal mine in the country. It is fully powered by solar energy.

Mundra Solar PV Limited, a branch of Adani Green Energy Ltd., built a 9 MW solar facility. This has built over 30 acres of reused land within the mine area. The installation is expected to reduce around 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over the next 25 years.
The bhoomi pujan ceremony for the solar plant was held in June 2023 by Rajasthan’s Energy Minister, Heeralal Nagar. The site was recently inaugurated by Rajesh Agrawal, who is a member of the Legislative Assembly from Ambikapur.
PEKB plays an important role in providing energy in Rajasthan. It supplies coal for electricity generation, which reaches nearly 80 million consumers. Now, with the addition of a solar-powered system, the mine has converted to complete energy independence.
It will reduce operating costs and also be helpful to the environment. The mine development and operations were awarded to Adani Enterprises in a competitive bidding process. Which is held by the Rajasthan government.
To support clean energy transport, India’s first hydrogen fuel cell truck was launched on May 10 at the same coal mine in Chhattisgarh. This initiative by Adani Enterprises aims to promote low-pollution transport in mining.
Each truck is equipped with smart systems and three hydrogen tanks, offering a capacity of 40 tons and a range of 200 kilometers. It shows how mining transport can be done better and may inspire other companies to do the same.
Environmental experts have praised these steps, especially in a sector that completely depends on fossil fuels. PEKB shows a strong effort to support India’s net-zero goals in the mining industry.
PEKB now stands as a model for how renewable energy can transform even the most conventional sectors.
