India’s Largest Floating Solar Plant to Be Installed in Chandigarh’s Sector-39

Chandigarh is creating history by installing the country’s largest floating solar power plant at the Sector-39 Water Works.

The new plant will have a capacity of 4 MWp (megawatt-peak) and is scheduled shortly after the Ministry of Power selected Chandigarh as one of 34 Indian cities to be developed into a solar city.

This project builds on the city’s earlier success when it set up a 2.5 MWp floating solar plant at the same location, which was then the largest in North India.

Plans are also underway to improve the existing solar infrastructure at the IT Park, where a 1 MWp solar plant will be installed on parking sheds. Officials from CREST (Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society) have stated that all upcoming projects together are expected to add 15 MWp of solar energy by the end of the year.

The administration is also taking steps to equip CHB buildings, municipal offices, and other government properties with rooftop solar systems. Impressively,  Solar systems were set up in 108 out of 114 government schools. Last year, these schools used 6.1 million units of solar power and made 7.32 million units, which means they produced more than they needed.

In total, the city has installed solar systems at 10,988 places, with a total power capacity of 90 megawatts.

This has produced over 270.26 million units of clean electricity and reduced approximately 1.86 lakh metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

A total of 6,627 government premises are now equipped with solar panels, adding 18.1 MWp in capacity.

A new solar capacity was added in the year 2024-2025, which has already generated 25 million units of electricity.
