India is taking strong steps to promote solar power in rural areas through a new “model solar village” in both Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka.
In Shimla, Tyawal, Chhakdel, Nerwa, and Sunda Bhaura have been shortlisted to become the model solar village under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
Each village is expected to receive around 1 crore Rs for installing rooftop solar systems. This will offer a 60% subsidy for systems up to 2kW and a 40% subsidy for systems up to 3kW.
Along with that, local Panchayats will also get ₹1,000 as an incentive for each installation. Government teams are looking for homes that can get solar panels. They are also helping people understand how solar power can be useful.
At the same time, in Udupi, Karnataka, five villages, Kotathattu, Kirimanjeshwara, Majuru, Nitte, and Uppoor, have also been selected for a model solar village competition.
The competition will be run from July to December 2025. Each will be judged based on the total solar capacity installed.
The winning village will receive ₹1 crore from the central government to expand its solar infrastructure. This effort is also part of the main goal under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana to develop at least one model solar village in every district of India.
