Japanese energy major JERA and British oil and gas company BP have launched a partnership project named JERA Nex bp, focused on offshore wind development.

This company will act as a global offshore wind developer, owner, and operator. JERA Nex bp starts with a solid base. It already has 1 GW of installed offshore wind capacity, a 7.5 GW development pipeline, and 4.5 GW of secured leases, giving it a total net potential producing capacity of 13 GW.

The company headquarters is in London, and it will begin by expanding its ongoing projects across Europe and Asia. Along with continuing the operations of its current assets, the company plans to grow its portfolio using external capital and competitive financing structures.

CEO of JERA Nex bp, Nathalie Oosterlinck, said the venture begins with a powerful portfolio and the combined global strengths of both companies. She expressed confidence in their ability to unlock new value in offshore wind and become a sector leader.

The partnership combines JERA’s experience in managing energy projects with BP’s skills in offshore energy and engineering. This blend of skills will help the company operate well and grow globally.

William Lin, Executive Vice President for Gas & Low Carbon Energy at BP, said the venture is a planned action to expand BP’s low-carbon portfolio. He highlighted that JERA Nex bp will allow them to optimise offshore wind investments and build a strong global project pipeline.

Satoshi Yajima, who is the Chief Renewable Energy Officer of JERA and CEO of JERA Nex, called the launch “a landmark day” for JERA’s renewable energy mission. He added that the venture represents a shared commitment to building a cleaner, decarbonised energy future.

As part of the agreement, JERA Nex bp Japan has also been introduced to focus especially on the Japanese offshore wind market. Masato Yamada, former Managing Executive Officer at JERA, has been named CEO of the Japan unit and will report directly to Oosterlinck.

The new joint venture has received strong backing from government leaders in both Japan and the UK. Takehiko Matsuo, Japan’s Vice Minister for International Affairs at METI, stated that the partnership between JERA and bp is significant and is expected to play a leading role in global offshore wind development.
