Kerala Startup Powers 1,000+ Homes With Smart Solar, Cuts Bills by Half

Power cuts are no longer a worry for over 1,000 families in Kerala, because of the renewable energy startup Energy24by7. The company has been helping households slash electricity bills by up to 50% while keeping homes running smoothly during blackouts since 2017.

One such family is that of Suresh Vijayakumar from Malappuram. His house and office, packed with smart devices and heavy appliances, used to struggle during outages.

But with Energy24by7’s solar solution,  the iCUBE 2000 inverter paired with solar panels and batteries, he now runs lights, fans, pumps, routers, and more without interruption. His Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) bill has dropped by 45–65 units a month.

Even during a five-day blackout last monsoon, when storms destroyed 25 electricity poles in his village, Suresh’s home stayed powered entirely on solar. “I was practically off-grid that whole week. My work didn’t stop even when the rest of the street was dark,” he said.

The idea for Energy24by7 was born in 2011, when co-founder Harsh Mohan and his classmates at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham realised most Indian households already had inverters, but switching to solar meant discarding them.

Their device, iCON, makes solar cheaper for families and reduces electronic waste.

Today, the startup is lowering electricity bills, also helping thousands of Kerala homes become energy-independent.
