Maharashtra has made an important change in how electricity bills are calculated for businesses using more than 20 kVA from July 1, 2025. These businesses will be charged based on kVAh, which means they will pay for the electricity they use but also for the extra power lost due to inefficiencies.
Previously, they were only billed for the power used in kWh. Now, if a company has a poor Power Factor (PF), meaning it is wasting energy, it has to pay more. This change inspires companies to use tools like APFC panels and smart energy dashboards to improve their PF.
Some businesses in Maharashtra have already started saving money each month by fixing their PF. They are also getting their investment back quickly and improving overall energy efficiency.
So, we can say that Maharashtra is on the right path, and a question also arises: what if Rajasthan follows Maharashtra’s lead?
Rajasthan also with its large industrial areas and increasing electricity demand, also faces similar challenges in energy efficiency.
The current billing method still ignores the hidden cost of reactive power, which leads to wasted energy and higher bills for industries. It also puts extra pressure on the power grid. Switching to kVAh-based billing can encourage businesses to use energy more wisely, reduce power loss, and make the grid more stable.
In this shift, Etrica Power plays an important role in Rajasthan. As a leading energy management company, Etrica is already helping businesses in the state by offering power factor correction systems, real-time monitoring tools, and energy audits. Their experience is helping clients to be prepared for any future changes in billing.
To better understand the implications of this policy shift and its relevance to Rajasthan, we spoke with Aditya Singh Poonia, CEO of Etrica Power, who has both technical expertise and practical understanding.
Q1. Maharashtra has adopted kVAh-based billing. What can Rajasthan learn from this?
Aditya Singh Poonia: Maharashtra’s decision shows that using electricity efficiently is now a must. Rajasthan should also look at how much energy its industries waste because of a poor power factor. If the state also moves to kVAh billing, it can push businesses to fix these problems and use the power grid more effectively.
Q2. How prepared is Rajasthan’s industry for such a change?
Aditya Singh Poonia: Most industrial consumers in Rajasthan still operate without real-time visibility into their PF. There is a large scope for improvement. At Etrica, we have already deployed smart dashboards and APFC systems in select industrial belts, and the savings are real and measurable.
Q3. What role will Etrica Power play if Rajasthan adopts this model?
Aditya Singh Poonia: Our goal is to make energy management simple and profitable. If Rajasthan adopts kVAh billing, Etrica will work with DISCOMs and industries alike to deploy smart metering, automated correction panels, and training programs for plant teams. It’s about turning a billing change into a business opportunity.
