This is applicable to all rooftop solar installations that qualify for subsidies under the program. The Indian government has announced a scheme for rooftop solar subscribers underPM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has made it compulsory to install M2M SIM-based monitoring systems.
In simpler language, this means that rooftop solar power will now make use of smart SIM cards in inverters that transmit data regarding power production directly into government servers in real time.
Individual physical solar production meters will not be required, thus reducing and simplifying the cost and process of installing solar solutions for homeowners.
Under the new rule, inverter devices such as dongles and data loggers with M2M SIMs will act as the main source of generation data. These devices communicate directly with central systems without manual readings. Odisha has already taken the lead in this respect, with its electricity regulatory authority recognizing inverters with M2M technology in their generation meters.
The government’s move is mainly driven by grid security and data safety concerns. With the scheme targeting rooftop solar installations in one crore households, total capacity could reach tens of gigawatts. Allowing solar data to pass through foreign servers was considered risky because it could be misused or affect the power grid.
To avoid this, MNRE plans to store all rooftop solar data on a national platform based in India and managed by government agencies. This will keep the data safe, encrypted, and under India’s control.
From September 1, 2025, the government will start testing inverter devices to ensure they work with open and vendor-neutral communication standards. Solar inverter manufacturers will have to make sure their products can directly connect to national servers. A final deadline for full compliance will be announced soon.
Overall, this change is expected to make rooftop solar cheaper, safer, and easier to manage. This will also help the government monitor the power grid more effectively.
By replacing physical meters with smart SIM-based monitoring, India is moving closer to a modern, secure, and future-ready solar energy system.
