SBI to Light Up 40 Lakh Homes with Solar Rooftop Scheme

The State Bank of India (SBI) has launched an initiative to light up 40 lakh indian homes with solar energy by the financial year 2026-2027. The title of this scheme is “SBI Solar Rooftop Program”. The plan was announced during SBI’s 70th anniversary.

The program aims to install rooftop solar panels on homes where electricity access is limited or unavailable. The project will support energy security, which reduces dependence on traditional power sources, and improve the quality of life.

SBI spent ₹610.8 crore through its CSR program to help 94 underdeveloped districts. The bank also gave out over ₹3.5 lakh crore in loans to farmers.

CSR efforts in healthcare, education, environmental, and rural development are appreciable. One outstanding CSR initiative includes planting nine lakh trees in the Cauvery Valley.

SBI is supporting underprivileged students and persons with disabilities. It is also setting up a special centre to support and fund modern industries like renewable energy, e-mobility, green hydrogen, smart infrastructure, and carbon reduction technologies.

SBI’s rooftop solar plan is different from the central government’s PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. While the government’s plan offers subsidies for free electricity, SBI’s model is along to the government plan, targeting 40 lakh homes with a focus on financing support.

SBI’s effort shows a visionary, sustainable approach to banking, where development, energy transition, and social welfare go hand in hand.
