This State Just Made History with India’s First Make-in-India Green Hydrogen Plant

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has launched India’s first ‘Make in India’ Green Hydrogen Plant at Kandla, Gujarat. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, officially inaugurated the state-of-the-art 1-megawatt green hydrogen plant.

The Deendayal Port Authority completed the plant in just four months. It marks the first phase of a larger 10 MW green hydrogen project. It is also the first project of its kind at any Indian port, highlighting India’s strong commitment to renewable energy.

A key feature of this plant is the use of a completely indigenous electrolyzer, proudly made in India under the ‘Make in India’ campaign.

Initially, the green hydrogen produced by the plant will be used to power 11 buses and street lighting within the port area. Later, DPA plans to expand the use of hydrogen across all port operations, including run vehicles, tugboats, and ships.

This is expected to reduce carbon emissions at the port and serve as an ideal model for other ports in the country.

The project will grow quickly. By the end of this financial year, 5 megawatts of additional capacity will be added. By the middle of the next financial year, the full 10 MW plant is expected to become operational. Once fully functional, it will produce around 140 metric tons of green hydrogen every year.

Green hydrogen is considered the fuel of the future because it can be used to produce electricity and run vehicles, ships, and factories.

The government has called this project a great example of green energy progress and praised the DPA for working quickly, planning for growth, and being efficient.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the project by laying the foundation stone on May 26, 2025, during his visit to Bhuj.
