The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a scheme to provide 54,000 solar pumps to farmers on subsidy. This initiative is under the PM Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan PM-KUSUM. Farmers can apply online from February 27, 2025, on a first-come, first-served basis.
According to R.K. Singh, the nodal officer, this scheme will help farmers replace diesel pumps with solar pumps. The government will give subsidies from both central and state funds. Farmers must apply on the official website of the Agriculture Department (www.agriculture.up.gov.in) and pay a token amount of ₹5,000.
Rules and Conditions for Application
After confirming the token, farmers must deposit the remaining amount within 14 days through the Indian Bank or online. If they fail, their application will be canceled, and the token money will be forfeited. Each district has a fixed number of solar pumps available under the scheme.
Farmers need borewell facilities before installation. The pump size requirements vary – 2 HP pumps need a 4-inch bore, 3-5 HP pumps need a 6-inch bore, and 7.5-10 HP pumps need an 8-inch bore. If borewell verification fails, the ₹5,000 token amount will be lost. Farmers can also get loans under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) with interest benefits.
Benefits of the Scheme
Farmers will get up to 60% subsidy. The cost of a 2 HP solar pump is ₹2.49 lakh, out of which the government will provide ₹1.70 lakh as a subsidy. Farmers must deposit their share of ₹79,186 as a bank draft to the department.
Once installed, farmers cannot change the pump location. If they do, they must return the full subsidy amount. The government will also cut off old electricity connections after installation.
This scheme will help farmers reduce irrigation costs and promote renewable energy in agriculture.
