Rajasthan has set a pioneering target to achieve 90 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by fiscal year 2029-30 as part of its new energy policy said by Mr Jiwesh Nandan, former IAS and the distinguished Fellow in Industrial Energy Efficiency Division at TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute).
During his visit to Solar Quarter State Leadership meet 2024 in Jaipur he provided strategic guidance to the industry charter working on solar and renewable energy. Blending his expertise with TERI’s research excellence, he advised to foster the development of Rajasthan’s new solar energy policy. This policy aims to achieve 60 GW of variable renewable energy by the year 2030, comprising solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind equally.
Further, he also tells the industry stakeholders that “Businesses reflect the changing values and changing economics, which the world is currently witnessing, by focusing on resource efficiency and clean energy. As businesses carry out such initiatives, we need to make sure that others learn about it and the first-movers become the pioneers to inspire action by many. Indian businesses today are developing technologies that shall meet our future needs. Consumers are at the heart of this movement – companies will follow where consumers take them. Hence, it is important to tell consumers what is possible. We will need to create excitement for people at large about sustainability and a net-zero future.”
Mr. Nandan pointed out that consumers are the driving force – businesses will adapt to their preferences. Therefore, we need to showcase the possibilities of a sustainable and net-zero future to generate widespread enthusiasm among them. Further, discussed integrating solar energy into state commercial and industrial sectors and its potential to shift agricultural energy use to daytime and incorporate electric vehicle loads. This initiative has the potential to reduce dependence on large-scale battery storage by enhancing the sustainability of the state.
Analysis done by TERI suggests that incorporating around 35% renewable energy into India’s energy mix by 2030 can be achieved without any extra costs. However, to understand the potential of the Renewable Energy Policy 2023 of Rajasthan, state utilities must carefully evaluate their current portfolio and demand patterns to determine the best approach. It also suggests developing a plan for integrating this growing share of renewables, specifically addressing the variable and intermittent nature of sources like wind and solar.
TERI acts as the Secretariat for the industry coalition and leads the initiative for the integration of renewable energy into India’s energy and industry transformation. Mr. Nandan’s visit to Rajasthan is to empower the industry leaders to accelerate sustainability practices, boost renewable energy use, and create a more integrated and environmentally friendly energy network for the future
