India generated 61.84 BU of renewable energy in 2024-25 till May 2024. Whereas, In 2021-22 the clean energy generation made up to 330 BU and in 2022-23, green energy increased to 372.9 BU. 

Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi announced in Parliament that India has generated 61.84 billion units (BU) of renewable energy up to May 2024. Renewable energy made up 19.19% of the total energy generated. 

The minister shared data from the Central Electricity Authority about the annual electricity generation from new and renewable energy sources in India. The country generated 330 BU of clean energy, making up 22.13% of total energy in 2021-22. Whereas, 372 BU was produced which accounted for 22.9 % of total energy generation in 2022-23.  

Altogether from 2023 to 2025, India has generated 364.6 BU of clean energy which is 20.9% of total energy generated. 

The government has initiated several schemes for many villages to improve power distribution and supply. Schemes like Deen Dayal Gram Jyoti Yojana were one of the initiatives for development in rural areas electricity networks. 

The minister said the government is helping various states to provide electricity to remaining households under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. In addition, schemes like PM-KUSUM were also encouraged for small grid-connected solar power plants, stand-alone solar-powered agricultural pumps, and the use of solar energy from grid-connected farm pumps.

These schemes benefit farmers and provide power in rural and remote areas to meet their energy demands. The government has started a scheme in February which is PM – Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to install rooftop solar panels in 1 crore households and provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month to the households.
