Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, said at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference in Germany that India has made impressive progress in its shift towards renewable energy and green shipping.
He emphasized that India is now a global leader in its commitment to building a sustainable future, balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility.
Joshi highlighted that India is the only G20 country to meet its climate targets ahead of schedule, even though it has the lowest emissions per person among these nations.
He mentioned that India has increased its renewable energy capacity by 175% since 2014, from 75 GW to over 208 GW today, with solar energy expanding 33 times over the last decade.
This showcases India’s strong focus on renewable energy and its global leadership in the fight against climate change.
In addition to talking about green shipping, Joshi discussed the maritime sector’s crucial role in reducing greenhouse gases. He explained that India is working to modernize its shipyards and reopen old dockyards to increase its green shipbuilding capacity.
India is also focused on using alternative fuels such as biofuels and wind power, upgrading port infrastructure, and targeting to become one of the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047.
These initiatives show India’s dedication to a sustainable future in energy and shipping, supported by government efforts, technological advancements, and global collaborations.
