Hitachi Invests $1 Billion to Raise US Power Grid and Supports AI Growth

Hitachi Energy, a division of Hitachi Ltd., has just announced a $1 billion investment to increase production of critical electrical grid infrastructure in the United States. This marks one of the largest investments in the US electrical industry.

A major part of this plan is a $457 million large power transformer facility in South Boston, Virginia, which will be built alongside Hitachi Energy’s existing campus. Once it is completed, it will become the largest site for power transformer production in the US. This will also create more than 825 new jobs in engineering, advanced manufacturing, and operations.

The investment will support high-voltage transmission, power generation, AI data centers, and large industrial projects. The company said it will also address rising energy needs from AI growth, in line with the Trump administration’s White House AI Action Plan.

In addition to Virginia, Hitachi is also expanding its other US facilities to strengthen supply chains, boost domestic access to grid technologies, and make the American energy system more secure, reliable, and resilient.

This move is part of Hitachi’s global $9 billion investment program, the largest in the industry, focused on manufacturing, R&D, engineering, and partnerships.

Leadership Reactions

  • Chris Wright, US Energy Secretary, said: “If we are going to win the AI race, reindustrialize, and keep the lights on, America needs a lot more reliable energy. Thankfully, Hitachi is delivering. The Trump administration looks forward to partnering with private industry to ensure affordable and secure energy for the American people, while creating thousands of high-paying jobs.”
  • Congressman John McGuire (VA-05) welcomed the project: “This $457 million facility will create more than 800 high-paying jobs in Virginia’s Fifth District. I am grateful to Hitachi, President Trump, and Governor Youngkin for their support in making this project a reality.”
  • Toshiaki Tokunaga, President & CEO of Hitachi Ltd., said: “The US is a main market for Hitachi, and this investment shows our commitment to powering America’s future. With our expertise in IT, operations, and advanced products, we aim to strengthen manufacturing, critical infrastructure, and data center growth driven by AI.”
  • Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Hitachi Energy, added: “Power transformers are essential for a strong electric grid and winning the AI race. Bringing large transformer production to the US is critical for supply chains and meeting surging demand. Hitachi Energy is in a strong position to provide these solutions.

With this growth, Hitachi Energy aims to secure the future of America’s power grid and will create thousands of jobs and accelerate the country’s ability to handle AI-driven energy needs.
