China Researchers Set New Record in TOPCon Solar Cell Efficiency

by | Sep 17, 2025 | News | 0 comments

A team of researchers from Yangzhou University, China, has found new ways to make TOPCon solar cells more efficient by improving their rear-surface treatments.

Their study tested four techniques, acid etching, acid etching with micro-texturing, alkali polishing, and alkali polishing with micro-texturing, and discovered that alkali polishing combined with micro-texturing delivered the best results.

The experiments showed that this method helped the solar cells trap more light, waste less energy, and improve two important measures of performance, open-circuit voltage and fill factor. The best results came from cells that reached an efficiency of 24.78% with a fill factor of 84.24%.

According to the researchers, the textured rear surface allows longer light waves to pass through more easily, which increases energy absorption and lowers resistance. As a result, the cells become more reliable and can generate more electricity.

The study, published in the journal Solar Energy, gives clear guidance on how to design the back side of TOPCon solar cells. This approach could make solar technology more efficient and reduce costs in the future.
