Indian Railways is slowly moving towards cleaner energy by using more solar power. India has a bunch of railway stations switching to solar power now. Like, by November 2025, there will be 2,626 of them running on it across the country.
That seems like a good move because it cuts down on electricity costs and does less damage to the environment, or at least that’s what it looks like.
In just this financial year, they added 318 more stations to the list. It’s kind of impressive how fast they are pushing renewables.
Indian Railways is not stopping there, though. They have expanded their total solar capacity a lot, too, along with all these stations.
It has now commissioned 898 MW of solar power, a huge jump from just 3.68 MW in 2014. This shows how solar energy use has grown over the past decade.
Of the total capacity, 629 MW is used for traction, which directly supports running electric trains. The remaining 269 MW is used for non-traction needs such as station lighting, workshops, railway offices, and staff quarters.
Solar panels are also being installed on railway buildings and unused railway land. Indian Railways is pushing more solar energy into its network. That seems like a good way to handle their increasing energy demands.
The efforts here are about improving energy security. They cut down on relying so much on old power sources. Expanding solar like this takes steps toward lower carbon emissions. It’s kind of obvious but still important.
